Sim Fest 2012
EDMONTON - May 31 & June 1, 2012
A 2-day conference to celebrate and promote simulation-based teaching and learning in healthcare. Simulation-based teaching and learning continues to grow in importance among the health care community by enhancing experiential learning and improving patient safety.
SIMFEST 2012 will focus in particular on the development and integration of simulations for improving teaching and learning in allied health disciplines, such as diagnostic imaging, respiratory therapy, medical laboratory technology, dental programs, animal health, pre-hospital (EMT and paramedic) and personal fitness trainer.
EMS Research Day
NOVA SCOTIA - March 20, 2012 - SPEC, led by Walter Tavares, has collaborated with educators, clinicians, regulatory bodies and employers to develop a global rating scale for the assessment of paramedic clinical competence. A summary of the study is being presented at this year's EMS Research Day in Nova Scotia. Look for the summary on the SPEC website as soon as it is released.
National Exam Update
TORONTO March 2012 - The National Exam group is set to meet in Edmonton, Alberta:
- BLUEPRINTS FOR THE PCP AND ACP EXAMS WERE FINALIZED
- THE FIRST OFFERING IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 2012
- AN INFORMATION PACKAGE INCLUDING THE BLUEPRINTS AND OTHER KEY DETAILS WILL BE PUBLISHED ON THE COPR WEBSITE

OTTAWA - The Paramedic Association of Canada has officially release the 2011 National Occupational Competency Profile (NOCP) in October 2011. It has a number of changes including a new area of practise referenced in Area 8: Health Promotion and Public Safety. These changes will obviously impact education across Canada. SPEC is working closely with these changes to provide some guidance as we move forward with CMA accrediation. CMA has officially accepted this document for program accreditation. The implementation date for this is still unclear. Appendices 4 and 5 have not been released yet. Keep checking back to the SPEC website for more updates.
Validity of Computer-Based Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)
ALBERTA - With the growing responsibilities of many health care professionals including prehospital healthcare professionals, the need to assess ethical judgement, decision making and interprofessional skills are becoming more important. NAIT has completed some initial research surrounding a process using multiple interviews to assess these skills.
